RECO

Ghent, Belgium - 70 m²
2024 - 2025

Set within the upper floor of a former hotel from 1927, the apartment reconsiders a fragmented, inward-looking layout of small, disconnected rooms and limited views. The intervention begins by removing rather than adding, stripping back layers to reveal the full height beneath the roof and restoring a sense of generosity to the space.
A central volume gathers the essential functions and structures the apartment without enclosure. Circulation flows around this element in a continuous, doorless sequence, balancing openness with a subtle sense of privacy.
The kitchen island acts as both object and anchor, concentrating the programme into a single sculptural gesture while framing specific views across the city. Each position establishes a distinct relationship to its surroundings, reinforcing the spatial continuity. Despite its limited footprint, the apartment remains adaptable, where the living area expands and contracts through use, forming a coherent domestic landscape defined by continuity, light and orientation.
